Do low energy light bulbs save energy? + May Featu

Journal Entry: Thu May 3, 2007, 2:49 AM
Last week I had a chap come to the door asking about our energy efficiency and ask me if I wanted four free low energy light bulbs. They are all into telling you that you save 80% on your lighting bill and they have everyone believing this but it's in my nature to question anything that is instigated by governments or pressure groups. So lets look at the reality. Facts:
We use lighting a lot in winter when we also have heating on.
We use Lighting at night in spring and autumn when we often have heating on.
We use lighting very little is summer as it's light until late.
All electrical energy dissipated in a light bulb in converted into light or heat.
Therefore a old type high energy light bulb is simply a light plus heated but as nearly all the time we are using lights we are also using heating so the energy in not being lost but is adding to the required heating. The result will be that the heating systems will switch off sooner and be used less. Hence, most of the time there is little or no actual energy saving. Strange how I've never seen anyone point this out!
Obviously this only applies to the cooler parts on the planet, it you live somewhere where its hot all the time then not only are you a luck **** but low energy light bulbs do save energy.

Thanks for the feature!

I assume you mean the coiled light bulbs? I will still buy them despite what you said. We always have a light on because, except for the office/studio we have a dark apartment and need the light, other then bedtime of course. We also have "power out" for about 1 hour every day, where we use candle light and read or go outside.

Also it may save energy in the actual making of the bulb. I have not changed my energy bulbs since I have installed them (it has been over a year for some of them) but I have to change incandescent bulbs every 2 or 3 months.

Oh I'm not suggesting that anyone doesn't use low energy lightbulbs, after all I use them myself. I was simply pointing out that the energy saving is nowhere near what we keep being told it is. You only really make energy saving when you have lights on without any heating.

Hehe, you should see our server (probably negating all our energy saving moves) we don't need to turn on the heating in the winter it generates so much of it...

Well at least what you spend running the servers you save on heating; well in the winter anyway!
