Restrictive stock rules

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 26, 2009, 4:08 AM
Restrictive Stock Rules

So many stock artists on dA have very restrictive rules. This is something which I've been finding irritating recently and has been driving me more to using my own stock and drawing. Don't get me wrong, I think stock artists have every right to make up their own rules and if we use the stock we need to follow the rules. I just wonder why so many stockers have the don't post outside dA rule. dA is only a tiny subset of the art world, we make art to get seen so why the no posing outside dA rule? Also with prints, why allow prints in dA where the artist is ripped off with a tiny share of sales and not outside where artists can get a better deal? I'm now trying to avoid using stock with these restrictive rules simply because I want to post my work outside of dA and be able to sell prints. Anyway if any stock artists read this maybe you could reconsider whether you need such restrictive rules! :)

::Good Stock Accounts::

I've decided to try to update this section, some of these accounts are almost dead but they still have good stock so I'll leave them in. All stock accounts here give automatic print permission

I agree with your comment. and what makes it worse is ,
not only are you restricted to dA only , but in some cases (not all)
you're not allowed to make prints without their permission. which makes
me feel like asking " then why allow us to use them in the first place ? "
type of questions ...

anyhow , lovely features in this journal

Yeah, I now have difficulty getting my head round the restrictions in most cases. Why would I spend days making a piece of art I can't display anywhere other than dA, it doesn't make sense. Compare with the rules on SXC which allow almost anything. I know many will give print permission if you ask but most views are in the first day so if you have to ask you lose your best chance for print sales. I'm just using my own stock and unrestricted from now on.

Thanks, there's a lot of good art out there!

I can't seem to get large enough images from sxc
yet , I see a lot of really talented manippers using
stuff from there... am I doing something wrong ?

as far as my own personal works go , I don't think they're
really good enough to sell ..
if I were as good as you & Karla I'd think about it :)
I really do idolize you and Karla , you're both excellent
artists and I strive to be as good as you one day

and you're welcome , indeed there is a lot of magnificent art
out there , both on and off dA :)

Sxc images are large so if you're only getting small images you are probably doing something wrong. First make sure its the free images you're looking at, the top one are premium that you have to pay for and you won't get large versions of these for free. I think you also need to have an account to use it, recently it's started asking me to sign in, it never used to! To get the large version either click on the image or the download button below. This brings up the image in a pop up screen, I suppose you may not get it if you have pop ups blocked but I have pop up blocking and have never had a problem. I suspect that's not a lot of help but it's all I can think of!

yeah I thought of that after I had asked you,
but did try the enlarge picture by clicking the
image I had wanted , and it like you said , asked
me to log in. so ; I created an account there and
was able to download the fullsize without a problem :)

Before I begin my spiel I have to say ...Great journal!!! Truly food for thought and obviously ... for discussion! It also has given me a whole bunch of new stock providers who are less restrictive!

If this post is redundant (as I have not had time to read all 107 comment)... let me apologize in advance if I repeat past comments! :D

I have found that in most cases (all but one ... so far) when I have asked for permission to put a piece on my personal site or to show/sell a piece, I have received permission without any hassle. I always offer to credit the stock provider and ask how they would like to be credited ... some don't want their real names used other want full disclosure.

That process its great in theory and usually works ... but for the accounts that are unattended, you know, those accounts that you note (as requested) for usage permission and then do not get an answer for weeks!

It would be nice if the stock providers could give a heads up if they are not going to be available and in the case of an extended absence, loosen their stock rules or remove the stock!

I do try to use only stock from accounts that are active (i.e. ones that have recent submissions or current journal entries). I will occasionally email someone before using an image (if I can wait) if it seems they are not keeping up with their account. But it is very frustrating to find the perfect image and then not be able to continue with your image because you are waiting for permission!

And then there have been the times I've used an image only to find the account closed and no way to contact the stock provider :explosion: so now (if it is an image I have downloaded at an earlier time) I check it out before using.

As all this takes time ... and it can be a pain; like you, I try to use my own photo's as much as possible and I am trying to learn more about drawing and airbrushing!

It takes me longer to create images than you (I am always amazed by the quality of work you produce so consistently) but even with the little I do create there are many times I wish I had "carte blanche" with the stock and did not have to worry!

In the end though; what keeps me going and eases my frustration is... it's "free" and the quality (on average) is quite good and in some cases ...amazing! If all I have to "pay" is a little bit of my time (to ask permission) and an occasional donation (when I can)... that is a price I can happily afford!

Again ... great Journal!

I have a pretty light set of rules at my stock account *B-SquaredStock mainly because I don't want to limit artists. All I ask for is credit and notification. What I don't like to see is my stock being reposted or 're-formed' and offered as stock by another artist (and this has happened quite often, on DA and off).

I agree with a lot that has been said in these comments, often I won't use the stock of an artist that seems to have strict rules. To me, it seems a waste to offer something as stock and then put a ton of restictions on it.

That's cool, I'll take a look at your stock!
I just find it odd how dA is so out of line with other free stock providers. I can see that people would be interested in seeing what has been made and being credited but what's with having to ok every website a picture is posted on! Also, since most stock is provided by stock users anyway wouldn't it be better if we all mode the stock unrestricted!

That would be great! I think that's probably why I'm so mellow with my rules. As an artist, I'd sooner use stock from a provider with rules that are not overly strict so I try not to have restrictive rules as a stock artist.
